is serendipitous love dead?

In today's dating culture, dating sites and apps are the main tools for finding a potential partner for a night, or a day, or forever. Every "single" person I know is a member of one or many dating apps: Tinder, Bumble, Coffee Meets Bagel, Happen, and FarmersOnly.

Each person has their favorite site they visit daily or hourly to sample the menu. Many of my friends, looking for a committed relationship, are often frustrated by the array of hookup sites and the confusion as to the intentions of the person on the other side.

Are dating sites the only way to meet someone these days? And why are we closing ourselves off to the people sitting right next to us? Is the meet-cute still alive?
